Flemington's Line Up

Freddie Hendrix

Freddie Hendrix

Over the past two decades, Freddie Hendrix has become one of the most in demand trumpeters in Jazz, and beyond. Also an accomplished composer, arranger and educator, the Teaneck, New Jersey native's skill and versatility has resulted in him working with a wide array of performers that range from the Count Basie Orchestra and The Christian McBride Big Band, to Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys.

With the release of his first recording as a leader, JERSEY CAT, Freddie is serving notice that now is his time. One of the music's most exciting players, Hendrix has forged his own sure footed, full toned sound, out of the tradition of Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Lee Morgan, and Clifford Brown. A powerful septet recording, JERSEY CAT, a scintillating septet debut, impresses from the opening bars of the powerful first track, "St. Peter's Walk". At home on fiery, uptempo tracks, or on ballads like "You Don't Know What Love Is", Hendrix shows that he can handle any tempo and interpret any song with ease, and when called for, nuance. And on originals like "On The Rise" (one of his first compositions), "Madeira Nights", (inspired by his first trip to Europe), and "Whims Of A Waltz", Freddie's aforementioned composing and arranging talents are on full display. Among the other selections on this well rounded project is a wonderful performance of the Horace Silver classic "Peace", and a swinging rendition of Freddie Hubbard's "Hubtones".

A product of the esteemed Jazz program at William Paterson University, with a Masters in Jazz Studies and Performance from New Jersey City University, Hendrix also shares his knowledge and passion for the music by serving as a faculty member at the Hartt School of Music at The University of Hartford (Ct.), The New School in New York, and Jazz House Kids, in Montclair, New Jersey.

Whether leading his own groups, or lending his talents as a lead or section player in much larger ensembles, Freddie Hendrix continues to flourish as one of the most exciting trumpet voices on the music scene.

Cynthia Sayer Quartet

Cynthia Sayer

Award-winning instrumentalist, vocalist and bandleader Cynthia Sayer defies all the banjo player assumptions as she single-handedly re-popularizes the 4-string banjo in jazz. Sayer, who grew up in Scotch Plains, New Jersey, is celebrated as one of the top 4-string jazz banjoists in the world today: soulful, edgy, both contemporary and classic, with a playing style that is all her own.

Praised for her “drive and virtuosity” by The New York Times, Sayer rose to prominence as a founding member of Woody Allen's New Orleans Jazz Band, all the while exploring her wider musical interests and playing with other legendary jazz, popular and roots music artists. Her eclectic, swing-based shows treat audiences to the rarely heard range and versatility of the 4-string banjo, America’s original jazz instrument, and her warm, engaging audience connection wins hearts wherever she goes. Cynthia appears regularly in concert and at festivals internationally with her bands and as a guest artist. She has played with Bucky Pizzarelli, Dick Hyman, Les Paul, Marvin Hamlisch, Wynton Marsalis, Marian McPartland, Andy Statman, John McEuen (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band), and many others.

A multi-instrumentalist, Sayer's banjo, piano, ukulele and tenor guitar playing can be heard on feature film and TV soundtracks, most recently on ukulele in Woody Allen’s 2014 release, “Magic In The Moonlight.” Sayer was inducted into the American Banjo Hall Of Fame, played for two U.S. Presidents (once at The White House), performed with The New York Philharmonic, played in many top venues including NewYork City’s Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Joe’s Pub At The Public, and City Winery, has received several honors and award nominations for her recordings, and is proud to be the subject of a Trivial Pursuit game question.

Cynthia recently appeared on ABC TV’s “Word News Now,” Fox 5 TV’s “Good Day New York,” the national TV & radio show “Woodsongs Old-Time Radio Hour,” was a featured guest on “Siruis XM”, returned  to the popular National Public Radio show, “Piano Jazz,” was featured in Downbeat Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Just Jazz Magazine (U.K.), Jazz Journal (U.K.), enjoyed a smash hit tour in China with her Joyride Band, SRO audiences in Europe with her Women Of The World Jazz Band, and was selected as one of the Top-10 Concerts in Pittsburgh.

Cynthia is also an avid educator. Her newest release, “You’re IN The Band,” is an educational traditional jazz/hot jazz play-along (a book + 2 CDs/downloads) for student, hobbyist and professional musicians, and is already garnering rave reviews.

Cynthia Sayer endorses Ome Banjos, GHS Strings, Blue Chip Picks, and The Realist Banjo Pickups by David Gage.
